Following a two-year hiatus from music – during which time McGonagle polished off a MA in magazine journalism and began work as a reporter – the moniker Emét was created as a way to create alt-folk music at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

His four-track EP Cheers & All the best was recorded in Belfast’s Half Bap Studios following the UK’s first lockdown. It was produced by No Oil Painting’s George Sloan and mastered by Pete Maher (who mastered works for Damien Rice, U2 and The Rolling Stones). Drums and bass were recorded by Buí’s Matt Sloan and Rónán McQuillan, respectively.

I don't know, I guess getting old is just a montage of regrets and I waste time drafting lines I've not the right to say. Used to know his name. Wouldn't see his type round our estate: trench coat, peaked cap and the spine I lack. I waste time 'cos getting old is just the last thing on my mind. I don't know, I guess I've got a soft spot for regret. Trench coat, peaked cap and the spine I lack. Trench coat, peaked cap and the spine I lack.

JJ Johnston 02:49
If I bought a hazmat suit Would it be alright to stay with you? Every callous on my hands was worth the misery, Please forgive me when I say it hurts to leave. I can’t wait to take life for granted once again. If Irish Green Street’s made for ghosts, Safe to say that I’ll be haunted more than most. Every face I’ve come to know feels like a memory, But I gave you my name ‘cause you’re the best of me, And I can’t wait to take life for granted once again. And I’ll wait for you With idle hands and nothing else to do ‘Cause I can’t wait to take life for granted once again. I can’t wait to take life for granted once again.

Thran 02:54
And I'll hold someone else's hand. I'll hold someone else's hand and never question why, 'cos my head's too thran to understand and my heart's too dumb to die; so I'll make my bed on cold cement under jaded skies and tell myself I'm better now 'cos you're not on my mind. Let's go play another game and try to pass the time, 'cos there's no malice in the chase and it's good to feel alive. But if you're hellbent on being friends I won't be so surprised: there's a better man in the corner and he's giving you the eye. So I'll hold someone else's hand and never question why, 'cos my head's too thran to understand and my heart's too dumb to die. So you tell me I'm being strange, and I say you look snide, and we run out of things to say and I'll hold someone else's hand.

Tired of Oxford Street and hiding in crowds, it's too loud, and my skin's all but tough. The life that I thought I was living just isn't enough. I met a man in Trafalgar and he told me to run. He said try and keep up. I could spend my whole life in this city and keep getting lost. Home's just pubs to me, and handshakes and fathers scrounging drinks from their sons. The bell rings, lights go up, he says he'd have been prouder if he died with a gun, but his common sense won. Now he sighs to Finvola, all the songs once sung. On the grounds of O'Cahan I never felt young.
