Hate To See It

about

Emét (Emmét McGonagle) is an indie-folk musician hailing from the North of Ireland and based in Calgary, Alberta. With influences ranging from Leonard Cohen and Orville Peck to “spooky prophet” Phoebe Bridgers, the Derry native released their musical debut JJ Johnston in the depths of the coronavirus pandemic, gaining acclaim from a string of international titles along the way.

Follow-up singles I Am a Bomb Technician (If You See Me Running Try to Keep Up) and Thran would later be released as part of Emét’s first EP Cheers & All The Best, the title track of which was hailed by KEXP’s Kennady Quille as “fabulous”.

With support from a 13-minute short film comprising all four tracks on Cheers & All the best, the EP was described by Chordblossom as “certainly something to write home about”.

Since the EP’s release in March 2021, Emét has moved to Calgary Alberta where they are set to release Hate To See It - the first song to be released from their debut album Carlin’s Farm. The song details the daily routine of a keyboard warrior with no friends, no prospects and a questionable grasp on modern politics.

Hate To See It was recorded in Belfast’s Half Bap Recording Studios by No Oil Paintings percussionist George Sloan, with accompaniment from Buí bassist Rónán McQuillan and drummer Matt Sloan. Distribution was handled by AntiFragile Music.

lyrics

Long live the martyr:
a troubled man whose trouble’s all he knows.
He blames his children on a liberal state and
one too many protests on the go.
“I’m short on time,” he cries,
but it’s still the 1980’s in his eyes.
And where’s the fun without it?
And where’s the fun without the fight?

Unemployed, he chases boredom;
unannounced and unimportant.
The star he wished upon exploded
and landed like a beggar at his toes.
“My world looks fine,” sir, that’s a lie
if another day’s another flag to fly.
And where’s the fun without it?
And where’s the fun without the fight?

“One day I’ll die,” he sighs, and
when the moment comes to say goodbye
I hope there’s no-one by my side.
‘Cause, where’s the fun?”

Awk, sure, you hate to see it.
